This collection consists of the papers of Unitarian clergyman Henry Whitney Bellows of New York City. Included are letters, diaries, addresses, sermons, reports, dissertations, legal documents, and a schedule of properties.

Collection Description

This collection consists of the papers of Unitarian clergyman Henry Whitney Bellows of New York City. Included are letters, diaries, addresses, sermons, reports, dissertations, legal documents, and a schedule of properties. Correspondence between 1831 and 1882 relates to Bellows' religious work, his interest in Antioch College (1859-1872), his work with the U.S. Sanitary Commission, and his editorship of the Christian Examiner. Chief correspondents include Bellows' parents, his brothers Edward and John, Cyrus A. Bartol, James F. Clarke, and Edward Everett Hale. Other correspondents include George T. Curtis, Theodore Dorr, O. C. Everett, H. W. Foote, Amos Adams Lawrence, Charles Mason, and William Silsbee. The collection also contains extensive correspondence of minister Russell N. Bellows, Anna L. Bellows (a teacher at the Hampton Institute, later Hampton University), Anna H. P. Bellows, and some earlier correspondence of Eliza N. T. Bellows.
