Collection Summary

Abstract

This collection consists of autographs of U.S. political figures kept by Massachusetts Governor Roger Wolcott, including John Quincy Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington.

Biographical Sketch

Roger Wolcott was born in Boston in 1847, the son of Joshua Huntington Wolcott and Cornelia (Frothingham) Wolcott. The family was descended from Oliver Wolcott, one of the founders of Connecticut. Roger Wolcott was a graduate of Harvard College, Class of 1870, and Harvard Law School, 1874, and was admitted to the Massachusetts bar the same year. In addition to his legal practice, Wolcott became involved in Republican Party politics in Massachusetts, winning a seat on the Boston Common Council in 1877 and eventually becoming governor of Massachusetts from 1896 to 1900. Wolcott died in Boston on 21 December 1900.

Collection Description

This collection consists of autograph letters, certificates, and cut-slip autographs of United States political figures kept by Massachusetts Governor Roger Wolcott, including John Quincy Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, the Marquis de Lafayette, George Washington, and Samuel, Jabez, and Ebenezer Huntington, among many others. Included are signatures of many governors of the state of Connecticut.
